[edit] Work Being Done

The plan is to repair or re-route a few muddy areas on the White trail, aka Coney Island trails. Specifically...
  • Initially we will reroute a small section of the main trail & close the muddy section.
  • Next we need to move a small section of boardwalk & open a new exit out.
  • Lastly is the re-route of the connector trail after the long boardwalk from the CR Road side. Lots of briers to deal with so this will be a slow & painful(literately) process.

[edit] Summary

In all, 3 sections of the white trails were planned for Saturday. We had a good turnout and were able to get all 3 taken care of so the session was a success. Pictures of some of the work areas can be seen above in the pictures section.
Part 1 was a general reroute of the white trail in the middle of the section connecting the Newmans Lane lot with Chimney Rock Road. The area is generally flat, so any trail will eventually get rutted in due to the water that permeates everything. Instead of using the whole session to armor a section of trail that was well-worn in, a new section of trail was built and the old one closed to regenerate. The old trail was arrow straight and sat slightly lower than some of the terrain. The new trail uses the land a bit better and runs slightly higher.
Part 2 is the problem area in the middle of the connector trail. This is a low-lying area that runs through a pricker bush thicket and crosses a stream. A wooden bridge was built in years past but the trail was so wide that the 4 foot bridge sat next to a 4 foot wide trail. This sharp turn was closed and the bridge was moved to better suit the trail that now comes in at a better angle instead of a sharp bend. This is a particularly difficult area and only time will tell if the solution holds up or not.
Part 3 was more on the eastern side of the white trails and is generally the same as Part 1. A low-lying plus time require an occasional reroute of existing trails. Experience in the park gives us some idea of what will happen and how best to address it, but like many of the white trails, the best we can do is hope that it lasts a little longer before the trail needs to rotate again. This 3rd part was also completed in the same session.
In all we had a good turnout and were able to get done what we needed to get done. This was a great way to wrap up 2009 and we look forward to a successful 2010.
