[edit] Overview

In general, this page will aggregate all Trail Conditions posts over at the forums into a single page. Chapter leaders will endeavor to update the trail conditions throughout the year and note anything that is relevant to conditions on the ground. The hope is that you can use this page to help you make informed and responsible ride-plan decisions (e.g. if one park has a mud problem, you can divert to another with better conditions).

[edit] Editing Trail Conditions

NOTE: Chapter Leaders, you can edit your conditions post easily by scrolling down to your park, click the forum link (its blue - don't click the "Edit" link on this page - click the forum link so that it takes you to your forum post. If you're logged into the forums already you can then edit the post directly (please do not add a new post-edit the original post). If needed login to the forums. If you are prompted to login to the wiki, you clicked the edit link for this wiki page. Please hit Back and click the forum link instead.

Background: editing this wiki page is not required (unless you'd rather do that, then you have to contact Frank or Jeff). Instead, you will editing your forum post in the Conditions area of your park in the Forums. If you attempt to edit this page to change the conditions, you won't be able to do it because we "feed" the conditions text you see below from the forums to this page. We felt it would be easier to use the forums, since most folks use forums now, rather than having you edit conditions here. In addition, other sites, like MTBNJ's Advocacy & Access forum, take our forums feeds and display the forums posts in their site.

[edit] Statewide Generalizations

Trails in the north, with clay loam and organic soils ride soft and muddy within 24-48 hours of the last rain storm. Sandy soils, such as those in the Pines and Allaire and Monmouth County drain a bit faster (usually 24 hours after the last heavy rain is sufficient), but consult local conditions below.

Winter Conditions can exacerbate wet conditions. Soil may remain frozen a few inches below the surface and prevent water percolation. Therefore we recommend you only ride when trails are frozen solid or trails are dry. If you see frost hoar on trails, this means that the next thaw will create very soupy muddy conditions so please don't ride during times of thaw.

Again, these are generalizations and you should consult the local conditions below.

Aug 12th: We're getting some much needed rain (who would have thought we'd be looking for rain after last summer) but since we've been in drought for 2 months, trails should drain fast and be ridable tomorrow (Fri 13th Aug).

General Rules of Thumb:

1. Please allow a 1-2 days of drainage (after the rain stops) before returning to the trails (slightly less time if it was a passing shower and the previous days were dry weather), or the trails FREEZE SOLID.

2. As always RIDE THROUGH MUD NOT AROUND IT. We're experiencing trail widening issues here due to people skirting the trail trying to avoid the mud.

- Generally speaking Trail_Conditions#Allamuchy_Area Allamuchy North and Kittatinny Valley will have roughly similar conditions.

As of 6/3/10- Conditions are good all around the park. It has dried out and firmed up. Cherry Ridge Road does have a very wet section that has been torn up over the winter by Jeeps and Trucks but this is a fire road. Stay to the right on this section and you will be good.

Report any blow downs with trail name and location and we will take care of them.
